The Ott Family Farm originated in 1916. This farm has been carried on from generation to generation, and celebrated 100 years of operation in 2016. Carrying on Charlie's legacy, Matthew and Sarah purchased the farm in 2014 from Sarah's parents Charles and Victoria Ott, who owned and operated the farm, formerly known as Charles Ott Dairy Farm, from 1976 to 2006. Matt and Sarah's journey began on November 12th, 2005 when they united in marriage. The next day, November 13th 2005, after a lifetime on their own family farms, they ventured out to pick up their first small herd of dairy cows. They dedicated their lives to Red Line Dairy for the next 20 years. Along with farming comes bumps in the road, which led them to purchase the Ott Family Farm in 2014. Upon purchasing the farm came the desire to make the farm more sustainable, safely and ethically. They began to research and learn more about Regenerative Agriculture. Regenerative Agriculture reduces tillage, fertilizer, and chemicals, all while improving water infiltration and soil health. With the use of cover crops (never leaving soil bare), we are improving soil health and nutrient density not only in the crops we grow, but the animals as well. As time went on, their two daughters Mikayla and Maggie were showing little interest in carrying on the dairy operation as it is very demanding both physically and financially. Matt and Sarah then decided they needed to take the role of Regenerative Agriculture on their farm to the next level. While Matt and Sarah’s passion for the dairy industry never faded, they had to make the tough choice to start phasing out of the dairy industry, and reroute that focus in the direction of Regenerative Agriculture and Ranching. In the spring of 2021 Red Line Ranch was born with the arrival of 10 Dorper Sheep and 2 Years later, 15 Red Devon Beef Cows. Since then the flock of sheep has expanded to several hundred animals. All of the new additions to Red Line Ranch are 100% Grass fed and finished. No pesticides or herbicides are used in our pastures. They graze on pasture 100% of the growing season until conditions dictate that they need to go inside for the winter. While inside for the winter, they are still being 100% grass fed with the crops that have been harvested for them through the growing season, which are also chemical and pesticide free. We certainly could not do this alone. The whole family and some great friends have stepped in to help along the way. We are beyond grateful and blessed, and are excited to see what the future holds here at Red Line Ranch.
